About
I'm Ruth Suddes. I have been a graphic designer for the last 35 years and have always loved the illustration side of my job. I have recently retired from that wonderful (tough at times!) career and have decided to follow my dreams of illustrating and designing wallpaper, prints and cards with my new little business called WallCities.
The whole wallpaper journey began when the advertising agency I worked for had an office revamp and I thought it might be a good idea to design some bespoke wallpaper for us. I have always loved the traditional Toile de Jouy patterns (my daughter's first bedroom was decorated in a gorgeous cream and red version) and I was also inspired by the urban toile designs of the Timorous Beasties. So I designed a Bristol version of Toile de Jouy for the office (using found bits of art and illustration), which became a real talking point for employees and clients alike.
I have now refined the Bristol designs and recreated them in my own illustrative style. Choosing colours which suit the city and current interior trends, while still referencing the single colour traditional toiles.
A set of Bath illustrations is in the pipeline and I'm planning on a whole series of illustrations of cities and regions, celebrating the iconic and the quirky aspects of each one.
I hope you like them as much as I enjoyed drawing them!
